چکیده

Sometimes, qualitative values can be arranged in a hierarchy, a tree with certain properties. Hierarchies allow the definitions of following constructs: the confusion CONF(r, s) in using qualitative value r instead of the intended or correct value s (such as using ‘umbrella’ when ‘raincoat’ was intended); a predicate P that holds for object o within confusion ε, written Pε(o); the closeness of an object to a predicate (closeness of fit); how close or similar two objects are; predicate P(o), where the total (cumulative) error produced by object o is at most ε. The hierarchy used represents how close two qualitative values are, as regarded by the user. The hierarchy provides the context against which confusions are measured. Several applications and examples are given or mentioned.

Hierarchies Measuring Qualitative Variables

Qualitative variables take symbolic values, such as hot, shoe, Europe or France. Sometimes, the values may be arranged in layers or levels of detail. For instance, the variable place_of_origin takes as level-1 values European, African... as level-2 values French, German... as level-3 values Californian, Texan... The paper describes a hierarchy, a mathematical construct among these variables. Th...

Precision-Controlled Retrieval of Qualitative Information from Databases Using Hierarchies

Can we retrieve objects from a database that are just close to a desired item? Can we control the retrieval process up to a given error? Can we define a semantic similarity between objects to be retrieved? The paper seeks for positive answers to these questions by using hierarchies. Sometimes, qualitative values can be arranged in a hierarchy, a tree with certain properties. Hierarchies allow t...

Extending Databases to Precision-Controlled Retrieval of Qualitative Information

A hierarchy is an arrangement of qualitative values in a tree with certain properties. Hierarchies allow to define the confusion conf(r, s) in using qualitative value r instead of the intended or correct value s. From here, “predicate P holds for object o”, written P(o), is generalized to “P holds for o within confusion ε”, written Pε(o). These precision-controlled predicates are useful to retr...

An Investigation of the Antecedents of Consumers' Confusion in Purchasing an Outbound Package tour in the City of Isfahan by Fuzzy Delphi Method

The concept of consumer confusion has gained a considerable attention in consumer behavior literature during recent years. However,it is considered as a relatively new concept in marketing, particularly in businesses that provide intangible products such as tourism. This study aimed to investigate factors that potentially influence consumer confusion proneness in purchasing outbound package tou...

Graduated Errors in Approximate Queries Using Hierarchies and Ordered Sets

Often, qualitative values have an ordering, such as (veryshort, short, medium-height, tall) or a hierarchical level, such as (TheWorld, Europe, Spain, Madrid), which are used by people to interpret mistakes and approximations among these values. Confusing Paris with Madrid yields an error smaller than confusing Paris with Australia, or Paris with Abraham Lincoln. And the “difference” between ve...
